Acetone oxime, also known as dimethyl ketoxime, has the following properties and uses:
Properties
- Physical Properties: At room temperature, it exists as white needle-like crystals or powder, with an odor similar to that of chloral hydrate. The melting point is 61°C, the boiling point is 134.8°C, and the relative density is 0.9113 (20/4°C). It is soluble in water, ethanol, ether, and acetone, but insoluble in petroleum ether and pentane.
- Chemical Properties: It has the general chemical properties of oximes and can undergo reactions such as hydrolysis and condensation. It is easily hydrolyzed to form acetone and hydroxylamine under acidic conditions. It can also undergo condensation reactions with carbonyl compounds such as aldehydes and ketones to form corresponding oxime compounds.
Uses
- Chemical Raw Material: It is an important intermediate for the synthesis of various organic compounds. For example, it can be used in the synthesis of rubber vulcanization accelerators and antioxidants, which can improve the aging resistance and service life of rubber products. It can also be used in the production of fine chemicals such as pesticides and pharmaceuticals. In the field of pesticides, it can serve as an intermediate for some insecticides and fungicides. In the pharmaceutical field, it participates in the synthesis of some drug molecules, such as certain antibiotics and cardiovascular drugs.
- Metal Corrosion Inhibitor: In industrial circulating cooling water systems, boiler water treatment and other fields, acetone oxime is an effective metal corrosion inhibitor. It can form a dense protective film on the metal surface, preventing corrosive substances such as dissolved oxygen in water from coming into contact with the metal, thereby slowing down the corrosion rate of the metal and extending the service life of the equipment. Compared with traditional corrosion inhibitors, acetone oxime has the advantages of low toxicity and good effect.
- Analytical Reagent: In analytical chemistry, acetone oxime can be used as an analytical reagent for the identification and determination of certain metal ions. For example, it can form stable complexes with metal ions such as nickel and cobalt, and can be quantitatively analyzed by methods such as spectrophotometry and gravimetry, with high sensitivity and accuracy. In addition, it can also be used for the separation and purification of organic compounds. By utilizing its property of forming specific crystal structures or complexes with certain compounds, the separation and purification of mixtures can be achieved.
