Chemical Properties

Colorless or pale yellow liquid. Relative density is 0.9040 - 0.9350, refractive index is 1.4580 - 1.4700, specific rotation is +10° - -10°. It has a pungent, cool medicinal odor.

Uses

• Mainly used in the production of hygiene and pharmaceutical products such as toothpaste, tooth powder, talcum powder, medicated soap, cooling ointment, and anti - wind balm. It can also be used in small amounts when formulating the fragrances of some daily chemical products.
• As a food flavor. It is one of the top ten essential oil varieties in the world. It can be used to formulate edible fragrances for toothpaste, 1:3 chewing gum, etc. The usage amounts are 130mg/kg in confectionery, 76mg/kg in baked goods, 1.7mg/kg in soft drinks, 0.5 - 50mg/kg in cold drinks, and 1.0mg/kg in alcoholic beverages. It can also serve as a raw material for cooling ointment, anti - wind balm, and medications for oral inflammation and rhinitis.
• As a food flavor, mainly used to formulate the fragrances for chewing gum and cough drops.
• Used for treating neuralgia.
• Used in the pharmaceutical industry to formulate cough suppressants, mouthwashes, insecticidal ointments, and to formulate the fragrances for toothpaste, tooth powder, confectionery, etc.

Production Methods

• Obtained by steam distillation of fresh leaves of Eucalyptus globulus (of the Myrtaceae family), or other eucalyptus leaves, camphor trees, etc. The yield is 2% - 3%. It is mainly produced in Spain, Portugal, the Congo, South America, etc. There is also a large - scale production in Yunnan, Guangdong, and Guangxi in China. It is one of the top ten essential oils (in terms of production volume) in the world.
• Using the leaves of Eucalyptus globulus, which is native to Australia and distributed in Yunnan, Guangxi, Guangdong, Fujian, Jiangxi, Zhejiang and other places in China, as raw materials, and obtained by steam distillation. The oil yield of fresh Eucalyptus globulus leaves is about 0.5% - 1.0%, and that of dry leaves is 1.5% - 4.0%. Load the Eucalyptus globulus leaves into a distillation kettle at a loading amount of 200 - 250kg/m³, conduct water distillation for 1 - 5 to 2 hours, and control the distillate flow rate at 1L/(min·m³). The distillate is cooled, clarified, separated by oil - water separation, and dehydrated under vacuum to obtain the finished eucalyptus oil product. It can also be produced using the leaves of Eucalyptus citriodora or Eucalyptus robusta as raw materials.
• Obtained by steam distillation of fresh branches and leaves of Eucalyptus citriodora. The yield is 0.6% - 2%.
