Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) is a commonly used chelating agent with the molecular formula C2H3N4O8. It is a colorless crystalline powder with a strong pungent odor. The EDTA molecule contains four acetamide groups and one quaternary ammonium group, which gives it good coordination properties.
In the field of biomedicine, EDTA is widely used as a metal ion antagonist, antioxidant, and cell proliferation regulator. EDTA binds to metal ions strongly, so it can effectively prevent the impact of metal ions on biological molecules, such as DNA, RNA and proteins. In addition, EDTA also has antioxidant effects, which can inhibit free radical reactions in cells and delay the cell aging process.
In industrial production, EDTA is used as a chelating agent in wastewater treatment, textile printing and dyeing, and food processing. It improves the efficiency and stability of wastewater treatment while also increasing the durability and color of textiles and food products.
