Basic Information: Its chemical formula is C5H15NO2, and its molecular weight is 121.18. It can also be written as [CH3CH2N (CH3)3] OH. Essentially, it is the hydroxide of choline. The choline part is composed of a trimethylethylammonium group and a hydroxyethyl group, and the hydroxyl group is combined with the choline cation in the form of an ionic bond.
Physical and Chemical Properties: It is usually a colorless to light yellow liquid. It has strong alkalinity and its properties are similar to those of strong bases such as hydroxide. It can undergo neutralization reactions with acids. It is highly soluble in water, where it completely ionizes into choline cations and hydroxide ions. It can also dissolve in some polar organic solvents. Moreover, it is hygroscopic and easily absorbs moisture when exposed to air.
Preparation Method: It is generally prepared by the reaction of quaternary ammonium salts with strong bases. For example, using choline chloride as the raw material, a metathesis reaction occurs with a strong base solution such as hydroxide. After separation, purification and other steps, choline hydroxide can be obtained. The reaction equation can be expressed as: C4H14NCl + NaOH → C5H15NO2 + NaCl.
Uses: In organic synthesis, it can be used as an alkaline reagent to catalyze some reactions that require alkaline conditions, such as the hydrolysis and condensation reactions of esters. At the same time, it is also an important raw material for the preparation of other choline derivatives, and can be used to synthesize compounds with biological activity or industrial applications such as phosphatidylcholine and choline chloride. In addition, in some fields of the electronics industry, it can also be used as a component of cleaning agents or etching agents, using its alkalinity to remove surface impurities or perform specific etching reactions.
Safety: Due to its strong alkalinity, it has a strong irritating effect on the skin, eyes and respiratory tract. Contact with the skin may cause burns, and if it accidentally enters the eyes, it will cause serious damage to the eyes. When using it, protective equipment such as gloves and goggles should be worn.
