Dimethyl sulfate (DMS) is a colorless liquid with a pungent odor. Its chemical formula is (CH3O)2SO2. Dimethyl sulfate is a commonly used reagent in organic synthesis and has a variety of applications.

Application:   

1. Organic synthesis: Dimethyl sulfate is widely used as a methylating reagent in organic synthesis. It can methylate alcohols, phenols, amines and other compounds containing reactive hydrogen atoms. The methylation reaction of dimethyl sulfate is efficient, selective and widely applicable, so it is widely used in fields such as drug synthesis, dye preparation and pesticide production.

2. Chemical analysis: Dimethyl sulfate can be used as a derivatization reagent in gas chromatography (GC) analysis. It can react with some organic compounds to form corresponding derivatives, thereby improving their separation performance and detection sensitivity in gas chromatography.

3. Pharmaceutical field: Dimethyl sulfate has some applications in the pharmaceutical field. For example, it can be used to synthesize intermediates or active ingredients of some drugs. In addition, dimethyl sulfate can also be used as a fungicide.
