Properties of Benzalkonium Chloride 80% (Benzylammonium Chloride)
Appearance: A colorless to light yellow transparent liquid at room temperature, which may appear gelatinous or viscous at high concentrations.
Odor: Slight characteristic odor with no strong irritation.
Solubility: Easily soluble in water and ethanol. Aqueous solutions are neutral or weakly alkaline, with good surface activity.
Stability: Stable at room temperature. Avoid mixing with strong oxidizing agents and anionic surfactants (such as soap), as antagonistic reactions may occur.
Brief Introduction to Main Uses
Benzalkonium chloride is a cationic surfactant with functions such as sterilization, bacteriostasis, decontamination, and emulsification, widely used in the following fields:
1. Medical and Healthcare Field
- Disinfectant: Used for skin disinfection before surgery, mucosal irrigation (e.g., ophthalmology, otorhinolaryngology), wound care, and disinfection of medical devices (requires dilution before use).
- Preservative: Added to preparations such as eye drops and ointments to inhibit microbial growth.
2. Daily Chemicals and Personal Care
- Skin and Hair Care Products: As a bactericide and emulsifier, used in shampoos, body washes, hand sanitizers, etc., to inhibit bacterial proliferation (e.g., inhibiting Malassezia related to dandruff).
- Wipes and Hygiene Products: Added to disinfectant wipes and feminine care solutions to provide antibacterial functions.
3. Industry and Agriculture
- Water Treatment: As a bactericide and algaecide in circulating water systems to control microbial contamination.
- Textile and Paper Industry: Used for antibacterial finishing in fiber processing or as an anticorrosive additive in the paper industry.
- Oilfield Industry: As a bactericide in oilfield water injection systems to prevent pipeline corrosion and blockage caused by microorganisms.

- Leather Processing: As a preservative and bactericide to prevent mildew in leather during production and storage.
- Paints and Adhesives: Added to water-based paints or adhesives to inhibit microbial growth and extend product shelf life.
Precautions
- Irritation: High concentration (80%) is strongly irritating. It must be diluted to a safe concentration (typically 0.01%-0.1%) before use, and avoid contact with eyes and mucous membranes.
- Incompatibility: Avoid mixing with anionic substances (such as soap and carboxymethyl cellulose), which may reduce activity.
- Storage Conditions: Store in a sealed container in a cool, dry place, away from children and food.
