It is toxic and can be mixed with hydrocarbon solvents such as water and flaxseed oil. It has strong solubility in synthetic rubber and is suitable as a solvent for natural rubber and synthetic rubber. It is also used as a solvent for rosin, shellac resin, and oxyindene resin .
