I. Properties (Physical and Chemical Characteristics)
Appearance and State
Colorless to pale yellow transparent liquid with a pungent odor.
Weakly acidic, with a pH typically ranging from 3.1 to 4.5 (stable under acidic conditions, and its bactericidal activity can be activated under alkaline conditions).
Solubility
Easily soluble in polar solvents such as water and ethanol, and can be mixed with water in any proportion.
Chemical Properties
Contains 50% by mass of glutaraldehyde (molecular formula: C5H8O2), belonging to saturated straight-chain dialdehydes.
Exhibits strong reactivity, capable of cross-linking with biological macromolecules such as proteins and nucleic acids through aldehyde groups to disrupt microbial structures, thereby exerting bactericidal effects.
Relatively stable, but should be stored in a dark, sealed container, away from high temperatures and contact with strong oxidizing or reducing agents.
II. Main Uses
Glutaraldehyde is a highly efficient and broad-spectrum chemical bactericide and cross-linking agent. The 50% concentration product is commonly used in high-concentration demand scenarios in industrial and medical fields, specifically including:
1. Healthcare and Sterilization
Medical Device Disinfection:
After dilution (e.g., 2% concentration), it is used for immersion disinfection or sterilization of endoscopes, surgical instruments, dental tools, etc., especially suitable for heat-sensitive precision instruments (such as fiberoptic bronchoscopes).
Hospital Environment Disinfection:
Can be used for surface disinfection of wards and laboratories (requires dilution before use).
2. Industrial Sector
Water Treatment Industry:
Used as a bactericide and algicide in circulating cooling water systems to control microbial proliferation, biological slime, and algae growth.
High-concentration (50%) products can be directly dosed to prevent equipment corrosion and pipeline blockage by killing bacteria (such as sulfate-reducing bacteria).
Petroleum and Natural Gas Industry:
Used for sterilization in oilfield water injection systems to inhibit harmful microorganisms such as SRB (sulfate-reducing bacteria), reducing hydrogen sulfide production and equipment corrosion.
3. Agriculture and Animal Husbandry
Livestock and Poultry Shed Disinfection:
After dilution, it is used for spray or wipe disinfection of sheds and utensils to kill viruses, bacteria, and fungi (such as foot-and-mouth disease virus, Escherichia coli).
Aquaculture:
Used as a pond water disinfectant to prevent and treat bacterial diseases in fish (such as gill rot and enteritis).
4. Other Applications
Textile and Leather Industry:
As a cross-linking agent, it is used for leather tanning (improving leather water resistance and strength) and textile fabric treatment (enhancing dye fastness and wrinkle resistance).
Paper Industry:
Used as a wet strength agent for paper to enhance the strength of paper in a wet state.
Biomedical Research:
As a tissue fixative, it is used for fixing and preserving biological samples (such as tissue sections).
III. Precautions
Toxicity and Protection
High-concentration (50%) glutaraldehyde is highly irritating to the skin and mucous membranes. Protective gloves and goggles must be worn when in contact, and inhalation of vapors or contact with eyes should be avoided.
Storage Conditions
Store in a sealed container in a cool, dry place, away from fire sources and food, and protected from direct sunlight.
Dilution Methods
Strictly dilute according to the intended use before use (e.g., medical disinfection requires dilution to 2%), and avoid direct contact with high concentrations on humans or items.
